Spatial Evaluation and Quality Improvement of Changxindian Street from the Perspective of Young Women
2021
Overview
Abstract:
This paper focuses on the renovation of historic streets in Beijing from the perspective of young women. Taking Changxindian, a historic town in Beijing, as the research object, the study investigates how this specific group evaluates street spaces and identifies their particular needs.
In recent years, landscape design has shifted from “one-size-fits-all” solutions to focusing on the needs of specific groups. Against the background of urban renewal in Beijing’s old city, this study evaluates the current street conditions in Changxindian. Using space evaluation charts, I collected data on how young women perceive the street environment. The results show that this group prefers street spaces with organized parking, clear separation of pedestrians and vehicles, and well-maintained pavements. They also value abundant greenery, roadside seating, a variety of shops, and a vibrant local atmosphere.
Based on these findings, the paper proposes a set of streetscape renovation plans. These include facade improvements, the addition of green walls, and cultural graffiti to make the space more attractive and functional. The goal of these designs is to improve the quality of the historic street while making it more suitable for the preferences and daily lives of young women.
